17 Designer Handbag Classics that Won't Go Out of Style
What is a Designer Handbag?
The term "designer handbag' is quite broad and would include all bags of established brands. However, these are divided into three main categories:
Luxury Handbag Brands
These are the most expensive bags, the investment pieces that won't lose their value over a lifetime. Some of the most cherished luxury brands are Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Dior, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Fendi, Valentino Garavani, Givenchy, Burberry, Balenciaga, Balmain, Miu Miu, Salvatore Ferragamo and more. Worn by high-society and the ultra rich and famous, these bags are hardly accessible for the wider audience.
Some would classify part of the above as Aspirational Luxury, which is one level below the Luxury rank, however we prefer to stick to the main categories.
Premium Handbag Brands
Quality handbags of high to median price range. Usually, they are not so long lasting in terms of value, and are produced in larger numbers. Affordable for the middle class, yet high-grade, they are a good value for money.
Labels in this category include Stella McCartney, Dsquared2, Michael Kors, Off-White, Moschino, Coach, Furla, Alexander McQueen, Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs, Jimmy Choo, Kate Spade New York, Tom Ford, Philipp Plein, By Far, Karl Lagerfeld, among others. Makes as Liu Jo, Love Moschino, Elisabetta Franchi, Patrizia Pepe and Pinko would grade at the lower end of the Premium class, as we would not place them in the Mass Market one.
Several of these brands would come under an Accessible Luxury category, which would rank between the Aspirational Luxury and the Premium brands.
Mass Market Brands
As the name suggests, these are the mass produced bags, affordable even for young girls. Labels such as H&M, Zara, Massimo Dutti, Sisley, Mango and so on are the perfect examples of a true mass market brand - worldwide famous, with huge amount of products being sold.

The Fashion Shows
These designers are world-class stylist, with lavish runway shows, each striving to be more original than the competitors, as well as their previous catwalk events. Endeavoring the attention of both the potential customers, and the press, these shows are often so extravagant, that the common people cannot grasp the idea and meaning of the way a designer handbag may be presented, the entire setting of the show arena, or the makeup of the models.
Some of the designers with the most controversial fashion shows are Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Gucci, Moschino, Louis Vuitton, Celine and Vivienne Westwood. From exposed breasts and tomatoes and flowers placed on the journalists’ chairs to give their like or dislike, these shows have rocked the fashion world and are to be remembered for the time to come, exactly as the timeless handbags we presented above.
Materials used for the designer handbag production
In terms of materials, some labels use mostly leather, others have taken a more environmentally responsible approach with artificial fabrics and faux leather textures. Leather and fur from wild animals is nowadays banned or unaccepted by societies and companies alike. The regular calf skin leather is still accepted as a material, as it is a by-product of the meat production. Thus, it is actually more environmentally friendly to use this excess material in some way than to trough it away.
Some argue, that using faux leather is more harming to the ecology, as it is not as durable and will crack over time. The very cheap bags from faux materials can crack in a matter of months, being disposed of afterwards. As it is made out of plastic and treated with wax or polyurethan, it will dissolve very slowly, causing pollution, while the dissolvement of the natural leather will not have such a harmful effect. Although much less desired as they don’t look as classy and are not very durable, the handbags made out of natural fabrics are most eco-friendly.
