The Beginning
The year is 1983, the place is Italy. The Moschino brand was born with its first women’s collection of rebellious fashion, aligning with the spirit of the 80s. Franco Moschino, the founder of the fashion house, was not a fashion designer by profession – he was studying Fine Arts, and was an illustrator for mode magazines while studying. In 1971 the prominent Gianni Versace noticed him, and they had a brief cooperation. Later, Franco became a designer of another clothing brand which he developed until 1982. And in 1983 Franco merited his big success – with the extravagant and flamboyant clothes he reflected the characteristic taste of the 80s and being among the first to advocate environmentalism in fashion, he quickly gained popularity.
A year later the first men’s collection came to the fashion world, and in 1986 the Moschino Jeans line was launched, which in 2008 became the Love Moschino. Meanwhile, in 1989 he created Moschino Cheap and Chic men and women, a label still vastly popular today.
The Show Must Go On
The Moschino shows were always anticipated events both by the media and the public, as they are full of unexpected and full of irony or surrealism. Using humor to market his lines, Franco was known for teasing the fashion industry with untypical slogans embroidered on the garments. Moreover, his campaigns advocated against violence, drugs, and cruelty to animals, and made donations to charity organizations related to battling AIDS.
Unfortunately, Franco died at an early age of 44, a little after the tenth anniversary of his brand. Rossella Jardini succeeded him as creative director. Rossella was with the company since 1984 and was a friend and the right arm of Franco, thus the style of the label remained in line with the original designs of Franco. Subsequently, Jeremy Scott became Moschino’s creative director in 2013, with his first collection being shown in 2014.
The Moschino brand has been part of the Aeffe fashion group since 1999, and just recently, in 2021, the Aeffe Italia acquired the remaining shares of Moschino.
