Welcome to Sofia

Sofia City - the Capital of Bulgaria

Sofia is home to 1.3 million people, and also to Fashion Finder. With its rich history and culture, it is a must-visit destination.

Quick facts:

Sofia city capital of Bulgaria

The city has recorded history since at least 7000 BC.

It has been renamed a few times: the original name given by the Thracians was Serdica. In app. 447 AD, the Byzantine Emperor Justinian renamed it to Triadiza. Later, the Bulgarians called it Sredets and finally it was renamed to Sofia in 1376 after the Saint Sofia Church, the oldest one in the city.

The city is located at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain in the Western part of the country, at an altitude of 550 m, the 3rd highest capital in Europe.

Among the most renown sites to see are the Saint Sofia Church, Complex Ancient Serdica, thermal baths, the church of St. George Rotunda (4th century), and the amphitheater of Serdica. Don’t miss the basilica of St. Sophia, the Aleksander Nevski Cathedral, the Boyana Church (13th century, included on Unesco’s World Heritage list), the Archaeological Museum, Sveti Nikolai Russian Church, the Sofia Synagogue, among many more.

Shopping: there are several shopping malls with lots of stores. However, if you are looking for a local experience, visit the Vitosha Boulevard (known as Vitoshka) to get a feel of the atmosphere. You will find top fashion brands, lots of restaurants and cafes. And if you take any of the crossing streets, you will discover small local arts and crafts shops, boutiques and hidden bars.

Transportation: Sofia has a quite well developed public transport. The metro, buses, trams and trolley-buses are interconnected in a convenient network. City tour buses are also available for tourists, or you can grab a taxi – fares are quite low compared to the rest of Europe. Hiring a city guide is also a good option, if you’d like to make the most of your stay.

We recommend visiting the Tourist Information Center for more information and ideas on what to see in Sofia. A very short, but accurate text on the history can be found at the Encyclopædia Britannica.
